Isang Yun Competition 2009 which is presented by Gyeongnam Province, Tongyeong City and Masan MBC, and managed by Tongyeong International Music Festival Foundation, takes its aim at remembering the music of Isang Yun, the world renowned contemporary composer, promoting cultural exchanges among nations through music and supporting talented young musicians from all over the world. The Competition is held annually around November, rounding three different categories, this year cello(2009) again, in succession of cello(2003), violin(2004), piano(2005), cello(2006), violin(2007) and piano(2008).
The Competition is open to cellists of any nationality born on or after November 1, 1979 and on or before October 31, 1994. The application package with required materials must be sent to the Secretariat no later than August 15, 2009. Due to the additional mailing time, international applicants are encouraged to apply early, or required to send it via express mail in order to have the application package in the Secretariat on time. (* No application package arriving after the due date will be accepted except the one posted before August 1, 2009)
The completed application package must include the following:
• A completed and signed application form
• Recent resume / curriculum vitae
• Recording of applicant’s performance (in the format of CD, DVD, VHS tape or cassette tape)
• Two photos (front, waist-up, 5.5cm X 6.5cm)
• A copy of passport or any other legal document that includes a photo, date of birth and nationality of applicant.
• Recommendation letters from two eminent musicians. Only Korean and English languages are allowed. If written in any other languages, they are required to have a Korean or English translation and a copy of the original letter as well.
• A letter that proves the recording is not edited.
* No other materials (ex. newspaper clippings etc.) should be enclosed.
* No documents will be returned.
* No application package arriving after the due date will be accepted except the ones posted before August 1, 2009.
An applicant who has been selected to participate in the 1st Stage of the Competition must submit an entry fee of US$ 100.00 to the bank account shown below by September 12, 2009.

Repertoire
Preliminary Stage
- Recording of applicants' performance should be submitted to be judged by Preliminary Jury.
- The repertoire for the recording may be freely chosen by applicants.
- Total duration of the recording should be in the range of 20 to 25 minutes.
1st Stage
1. J. S. Bach. Three movements from Suites for Cello Solo, BWV 1010-1012; No.4, No.5 and No.6, necessarily including one Prelude
2. A. Piatti. One Caprice from Caprices for Cello Solo, Op.25; No.3, No.6, No.7 and No.12
3. Isang Yun. II and III from "Gliss?es" for Cello Solo (1970)
2nd Stage
1. J. Brahms. Two or more movements from Sonata for Cello and Piano No.2 in F Major, Op.99
2. Isang Yun. "Espace I" for Cello and Piano (1992). Or another work for Cello Solo with minimum duration of 10 minutes, composed since 1950
3. Additional work(s) can be freely chosen by Competitors, while the total duration of 2nd Stage performance should be in the range of 40 to 45 minutes. Competitors are allowed to perform a part of a complete work.
* Special Prize of US$ 2,000 will be awarded to the best interpreter of Isang Yun's "Espace I"(1992).
Final Stage
Each finalist will perform one concerto with orchestra chosen from the following list:
1. R. Schumann: Concerto in a minor, Op.129
2. A. Dvo??k: Concerto in b minor, Op.104
3. P. Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Major, Op.33
4. D. Shostakovich: Concerto No.1 in E flat Major, Op.107
5. Isang Yun: Concerto (1975/76)
Rules and Procedures Relating to Repertoire
1. Every repertoire must be played through memory, however, exception may be made for all works composed since 1950 and for Sonata(s) for Cello and Piano.
2. Total duration of a performance, which will be strictly enforced, includes applause and pauses. The Jury retains the right to stop a performance if it exceeds the allotted time. Repeats are at the discretion of the cellist.
3. Cellists must supply a copy of the edition of the score used in the preparation of each work performed to the Chairman of the Jury, if requested.
4. Changes in submitted repertoire or running order may be made only with permission of the Competition. No changes will be accepted after September 12, 2009. Any proposed changes must include duration.
