Надолбы были передовыми укреплениями. В летописях неоднократно встречаем выражения типа: "прогнаша их к надолбам"204 или "топташа их до самых надолоб"205, свидетельствующие, что надолбы были ЗиС-110 история автомобиля самым внешним видом укрепления. Иногда защитники выходили из укреплений и сражались за надолбами: "Приходиша Литовские люди воевати к Опочке и хотели посад зажечи и гражане не дали зажечи посаду, за надолобами отбишася и многих из них постреляли с города"206. Впервые надолбы упоминаются под 1237 г.207 Они широко использовались в XVI-XVII вв. и применялись даже в середине XVIII в. для усиления фортов на Сибирских пограничных линиях208.
